Thalitha Kum project aims to guide young girls

“Our purpose is to educate our young girls about gardening. They need to start growing vegetables and assisting the community."

Welgedaght community members started a project called Talitha Kum to assist young girls in the community.
One of the leaders of the project, Leah Motemele, explained the name comes from a biblical scripture about a young girl who became sick and died. Jesus later came and said Talitha kum (“Little girl, I say to you, get up!” in Aramaic) to the girl and she woke up.
The message of the project is to tell young girls to wake up and strive.

Leah Motemele is one of the leaders of the Talitha Kum project.

“With this project, we are trying to teach young girls about womanhood. We teach them how to take care of themselves. Our purpose is to educate our young girls about gardening. They need to start growing vegetables and assisting the community.
“So far, the outcome has been amazing. We go to elderly homes and donate vegetables, while we also sell some of the vegetables. This project is close to our heart,” she said.

It is also hoped that the project will assist with other issues such as unemployment and teenage pregnancies.
“We teach women to respect themselves because their bodies are also seeds. They need to take care because their bodies are also precious. Teaching them how to garden is for us to make them avoid unnecessary activities.
“We want to also make them aware that they can make a living out of planting,” said Motemele.
