Substation fire still under investigation

The substation caught fire on May 20, causing a black-out in many parts of Springs.

The restoration of the Munic substation on 1st Avenue will cost the municipality no less than R40m to repair.

According to Zweli Dlamini, the metro’s spokesperson, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
“We lost the transformer and it will cost an excess of R40m to repair the damage,” he explained.

Areas affected during the outage included the Springs CBD, Casseldale, Strubenvale, Largo, Daggafontein, Edelweiss, Selection Park, Pollak Park, Springs Extension, Welgedacht, Bakerton and Bakerton Extension, Geduld, Paul Krugersoord and Pietersfield.
Dlamini said all power in the area has been restored.
“Only power outages will be result of pockets affected by cable fault and/or theft,” he added.
