Work to recover the city’s revenue from non-payers of rates is underway in Springs.
The metro is disconnecting services such as electricity and water, and is yielding positive results.
“On Wednesday the city’s customer relations management service in the revenue collection division visited industries that owe the municipality millions for rates.
“One of the defaulters they visited, an owner of a block of flats in Daggafontein who is owing the city over a million rand, committed to immediately pay R500 000 at the Springs Customer Care Centre and negotiated for time to settle the outstanding bill.
“As a result, the water supply was throttled to lower the water pressure until they fully pay what is due to the city,” explained Zweli Dlamini, the metro’s spokesperson.

The disconnection operation comprises of a multi-disciplinary team of officials from the city’s departments of water, sanitation and energy, finance and EMPD.
“During the operation, some companies were found to have tampered with their metres after they had been disconnected before.
“The companies that tampered with the water and electricity metres received fines of R24 000 for first offences,” he added.
The city encourages all its customers to ensure that their municipal accounts are up to date to avoid disconnection of their services that may interrupt their daily operations.
