Quiet quitting is a workplace phenomenon that is making its way into organizations globally. It is generally defined as doing the bare minimum at work in order to fulfil your job scope.
This is in the wake of post-Covid practices adopted by employees who have come to re-evaluate how they react to their workplace’s emphasis on their mental and emotional wellbeing.
Before Covid hit the world with its devastating effects, the work ethic was a general do everything you can for the job.
Employees would go above and beyond for their jobs for the fear of being dispensable. Now things have changed, and they are considering their peace and general happiness over organizational aims and objectives.
This has had a severe effect on workplace relationships as well as the overall company culture as employees are no longer overreaching past their basic job description.
Managers have been known to contribute to this. Allegations of abuse of power and the subtle exclusion of employees from certain social organizational activities have not made things easier.
With employees reaching new levels of clarity by self-introspecting, they have reached a consensus that no job is worth a blow to their mental health and have resorted to quiet quitting or leaving their jobs altogether for other pursuits.
Companies can remedy this situation by adapting their company laws to accommodate for the mental and emotional health of employees and also allow for them to report superiors should they feel like they are being excluded or exiled from the company.
It is important for the company culture to establish grounds for employees who go above and beyond, going as far as completing tasks that are well out of their job scope.
This will, in turn, motivate employees to go the extra mile for the companies they work for.
