EMPD TIP OF THE WEEK

Be safe, not sorry.

The EMPD has observed an increase in the number of road accidents including pedestrians compared to the same time period last year.

They provided safety tips for pedestrians:
• Always obey road signs and traffic lights.

• Be visible. Wear light or bright-coloured clothing, especially when visibility is low, such as before sunrise, after sunset, or in misty or rainy conditions.

• Walk on the pavements or close to the edge facing oncoming traffic.

• Make use of pedestrian bridges when available rather than walking across the road.

• Always cross the street within marked pedestrian crossing or at street corners.

• At intersections, make eye contact with the motorist to ensure they see you before crossing.

• When crossing a road, do not walk and stop in the middle, wait until both sides of the lanes are clear before you can cross all the way

• Yield to any approaching vehicles while choosing even if you have a right of way- oncoming vehicles may reach you faster than anticipated.

• Avoid consuming alcohol or any medication if you are going to be walking.

• Avoid being on the freeways. It is prohibited for pedestrians and cyclists, and those who are found to be walking along or across the freeway can even be arrested.

The best way to avoid road accidents is for all road users, whether on foot or on wheels, to be more mindful and respectful of one another. Be safe, not sorry.
