Gang of masked armed robbers bomb ATM drop safe

A gang of heavily armed, balaclava-clad robbers arrived at the petrol station at 22:00 and held up the staff before bombing the drop safe.

Four armed robbers made off with an undisclosed amount of cash after bombing a drop safe at a petrol station in Petersfield on Sunday evening.

According to Springs SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Themba Tshabalala, a cashier on duty was cashing up for the day when he saw his two co-workers walk into the shop with their hands raised.

“They were followed by three balaclava-clad men carrying firearms, a crowbar and a sports bag,” said Tshabalala.

“The robbers demanded the workers show them the drop safe since the ATM was out of order and told them they wouldn’t hurt the workers or take their personal belongings.”

Tshabalala said the robbers tried to open the safe but couldn’t. They then told the employees to stand further away and cover their ears.

A few minutes later, they heard two loud bangs and saw smoke before the lights went off.

“They put the money from the safe in a refuse bag before attempting to flee,” said Tshabalala.

He added that when the armed reaction officers from ProSafe Security arrived on the scene, they found one man standing outside the shop who started shooting at them.

“The three others came out running during the shoot-out, and they all ran toward the field at the back of the petrol station,” he said.

Tshabalala said no one was injured, and no arrests were made.
