African Reporter journalist bags award

Kelebogile is GWISA Journalist of the Year.

Kwatsaduza – Futballing Girls hosted the Gauteng Women in Sports Awards – Ekurhuleni on Monday at the Kempton Park Civic Centre.

African Reporter journalist Kelebogile Chokoe won the journalist of the year award.

Chokoe was a finalist in the category along with Obedience Mkhabela, a journalist at the African Reporter’s sister newspaper, the Germiston City News.

“After all I’ve been through in life, I never thought I’d ever bag an award,” she said.

Chokoe added that the award is for all the women in sports she’s told stories of.

“Cricket, badminton, soccer, netball and disability sports are some of the sports where I met incredibly talented young women and telling their stories has been heartwarming,” she said.

Bongekile Miya was a finalist and a runner-up in the Sportswoman of the Year with disability.

Miya plays for the Kwa-Thema Disability Club and she said: “Though I didn’t win, I am grateful for the opportunity. It means a lot and it’s a boost for me to keep on excelling.”
