Hijacked truck recovered in Geduld

A truck was recovered along Robertson Street in Geduld after being hijacked outside a supermarket on Monday.

Two men have been arrested after a local security company recovered a hijacked truck on Robertson Street in Geduld on Monday.

The truck was hijacked at a supermarket on Cloverfield Road in Dersely Park.

According to Springs SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Themba Tshabalala, a response officer was parked near the supermarket while conducting routine patrols when the truck arrived to deliver stock at the supermarket.

After a short while, the officer saw three men entering the premises, pretending to be customers.

“He then noticed one of the men entering the passenger side of the truck, who had also noticed him,” said Tshabalala.

Tshabalala added that the suspect pointed a firearm at the officer, who in turn withdrew from his position to keep cover and immediately called for backup over the radio.

After a short while, the truck left the premises and the officer began to pursue the truck.

Tshabalala said a backup unit arrived, and a chase between the hijackers and the reaction officers ensued towards Geduld.

“They ditched the truck on Robertson Street and ran across an open field. The reaction officers began to give chase on foot and the hijackers opened fire,” said Tshabalala.

While fleeing, the hijackers discarded the firearm and proceeded to split up.

“Backup units cordoned off areas and successfully trapped two suspects. They were apprehended inside the field and one suspect fled the scene.”

The firearm was located inside the field and recovered. The truck was also recovered with all the goods still in the cargo.

The two hijackers are set to make their first court appearances at the Springs Magistrate’s Court.
