Abundance in light assists school girls with sanitary pads

Girls from Kwa-Thema schools received sanitary pads and menstrual hygiene lessons from Abundance in Light.

The women- and youth-led non-profit company Abundance in Light held a sanitary pad distribution drive at Kwa-Thema Primary School on October 28.

The drive was coupled with an educational initiative to empower girls with menstrual hygiene education and dignity.

Kgopotso Radebe, the founder, director, and facilitator of the NPC, highlighted that one in four young girls who menstruate miss school every month.

Learners were engaged in all the topics presented.

“This is due to the lack of menstrual products. Our initiative aims to provide essential sanitary products to girls of menstrual age while fostering education on hygiene practices with efforts to alleviate period poverty,” she said.

Radebe said the drive was a success, with almost 100 girls from Kwa-Thema Primary School in attendance.

“We are quite happy with how everything worked out, particularly the parents’ co-operation,” said Radebe.

Kgopotso Radebe guides the young girls in saying a pledge to themselves that instils confidence and validation for what happens when they’re on or off their menstrual cycle.

An emotional response was elicited by the topic, as noted by Radebe, triggering one of the girls.

“She was reassured, though, that she was in a safe space, at ease, and surrounded by the right people who genuinely loved and supported her. She was as happy as the others by the time the workshop was over,” she said.

Radebe concluded by thanking the community and individuals for donations to the drive. The NPC has opened its arms to any donations that could help a girl child in need. Call Radebe on 063 977 4519.
