Springs comes together

These restorations have been the ultimate act of unity for the town

Residents of Springs have come together to restore the beloved town back to its beautiful state. This has been an ongoing project for residents and local businesses since 2022.

The town, like many others, has seen many dark days but the recent efforts have given everyone a reason to smile.
From the restoration of the War Memorial and Fountain, the Markon Fountain and the Moth Memorial to the opening of the Springs Mining and Military Museum, there has been a flurry of activity all around the town.

Residents have also witnessed the cleaning up of local parks and clearing up of the Murray Park dam of the hyacinth.

Recently the restoration of the Mudhook Memorial Hall as well as the Robbin Tibbott Memorial on Ermelo Road has come to fruition.

These restorations started shortly after the opening of the museum and have carried on into the New Year with much anticipation from the rest of the Springsites.

Businesses are also taking it upon themselves to keep their surrounding environments clean, spreading the energy towards the residents and their homes.

Historian and the pioneer of the movement, Tony da Cruz, details some of the efforts that local businesses have undertaken to contribute to the uplifting of Springs.

“Alan and Dean Levin at Ace Auto Spares have adopted the stretch of Fourth Avenue from the top of the historic Geduld Subway to the fire station to keep the road and sidewalks clean.”

The historical bridge below the Geduld subways has been cleaned.

Tony’s mantra has always been to start something and to maintain it for future generations.

“Chaka Smith and his team have chomped away at the water hyacinth and the job is pretty much done. Now we must keep it that way.”

Tony extends his heartfelt gratitude to all the relevant stakeholders.

“Thank you to all businesses that are doing their bit and cleaning up their sidewalks and roads. There are many doing it already. You have taken back our dignity.”
