Holfontein mielie field murderer found guilty

Detective Sergeant Martin Foreman of Springs SAPS managed to secure life imprisonment for Sfiso Sibanyoni (27) for the murder of a 74-year-old Bakerton resident.

Sfiso Sibanyoni (27) was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a 74-year-old man who was found dead in a mielie field in Holfontein in 2022.

Springs SAPS Detective Sergeant Martin Foreman secured Sibanyoni’s additional 15 years of imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances and five years for hijacking.

The sentence that was handed down in January was confirmed by SAPS provincial spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela.

The deceased’s lifeless body was discovered by a farm worker who was checking the mielie field on April 22 after he was reported missing on April 19 when he did not return home that night.

His car, a white bakkie, was found on the N12 Etwatwa offramp. The farm worker saw that something did not look right because some of the mielie plants had been disturbed.

He then followed the footprints that led him to the deceased.

“The deceased body had signs of strangulation and stab wounds,” said Sekgobela.

He was a Bakerton resident who used to sell food to farm dwellers in and around Springs.

Ekurhuleni district commissioner Major General Anna Sithole commended Foreman for his thorough investigations in the dockets that led to the lengthy jail terms.
