The rebirth of old regime building

It's time to make way for new and exciting things in Springs.

Springs has seen a boom in development in recent times and it seems the growth won’t stop. The town’s latest spot to receive a new look is the old brewery building on Paul Kruger Highway.

The building, situated next to the Kellogg’s building, has been undergoing demolition under a new project.

Project manager Gert Parsons briefly explains the history of the land. He says the building was first a post office and later served as offices for black people seeking employment.

The building later became a beer hall which paved the way for Kwa-Thema Breweries. Once the brewery closed, the building remained unoccupied, subjecting it to years of neglect and eventually vandalism.

“Once it was acquired, it took about two years for us to receive the necessary rezoning certificates.”

Gert says he was approached in November to take over the project and has since been an active participant.

“We have implemented sustainable methods to reduce the amount of waste created during the demolishing and rebuilding of the premises.”

Some of the methods include crushing the concrete on site and reusing material.

“We are not dumping anything and we will use every bit we can to remain environmentally friendly.”
