Food drive spreads winter cheer

The church needs more sponsors to continue doing its good work.

The Selcourt Methodist Church is spreading some goodness this winter with its food drive initiative, which the church has run for 26 years.

Reverend James Headbush speaks about the need for more sponsorships because they feed 150 people weekly.

“We raise some funds every year from cash and kind. We have had some donations from businesses and private individuals, but it hasn’t been the same since Covid.”

Margie Webb, the woman behind the initiative’s smooth running, says having insufficient food is heartbreaking.

“It hurts me when the packets have run out, and I have to turn people away for the week.”

The packets usually contain bread, some maize meal, rice, a soup packet and non-perishables. The church gives special thanks to Checkers Selcourt Towers, Pick n Pay Sharon Park and Selcourt SPAR for their donations.
