CoE clarifies its future and impact of Ken Gampu Theatre amid rumours

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has confirmed that the Ken Gampu Theatre, also known as the Springs Theatre, is not facing closure.

Recent concerns about the future of the Ken Gampu Theatre, commonly known as the Springs Theatre, have been addressed by the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE).

They have reassured the public that the facility is not facing imminent closure. CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said the rumours suggesting that the theatre might shut down are unfounded, and the theatre remains operational and continues to serve its community.

In response to an inquiry about the theatre’s historical and cultural importance, Dlamini highlighted that the facility was built to unearth and cultivate cultural talent in the area.

“As the population grows, so does the need for such facilities, underscoring their continuous relevance and importance.

“The CoE has embarked on a comprehensive maintenance plan for the venue and is exploring potential partnerships to enhance the variety and frequency of productions and programmes.”

Addressing concerns about the theatre’s significance, Dlamini said it is essential to note that the facility was established with the mission to unearth and cultivate local cultural talent.

“This commitment continues as the population grows and the demand for cultural spaces grows.”

Dlamini stated that the theatre plays an essential role in the local economy.

“When there are shows, local entrepreneurs get to sell their products, and artists also get to exhibit and sell their products. There is also the issue of crowd-pulling from other areas, which may lead to some investors having an interest in investing in the area,” he said.

Regarding future plans for the Ken Gampu Theatre, Dlamini noted that the theatre is an integral part of the city’s development and theatrical landscape.
