Six suspects could not escape the long arm of the law when members of the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) rained on their criminally-fuelled parade on February 24.

At 06:45, BFS officers patrolling the N12, between Sundra and Springs off-ramps, pursued a brown Volkswagen Amarok travelling at high speed.

“Officers were able to bring the vehicle to a stop on the R555 towards Etwatwa and found four occupants inside,” said BFS spokesperson Warrant Officer Grant Giblin.

“A search of the back of the bakkie led to the discovery of a large quantity of suspected stolen copper wire, in bags and wrapped in a duvet.

“The suspects, aged between 23 and 36, were arrested, copper valued at an estimated R60 000 was seized and the vehicle impounded.”

Later, acting on information, BFS units were stationed along the N17 to intercept a truck from Swaziland allegedly transporting dagga.

At 20:30, a truck matching the description was pulled over at the Dalpark tollgate.

“A thorough search was conducted and two large bags containing 34 clear bags of dagga was found inside the trailer,” said Giblin.

“The estimated valued of the product is R50 000.

“A 37-year-old foreign national was arrested and was later joined by a 32-year-old foreign national who offered officers R15 000 in exchange for his friend’s release.”

The dagga and cash offered as a bride were confiscated and booked in as exhibits.

“We would like to commend the BFS officers for their commitment even when faced with financial gain,” said Giblin.

Investigations into both matters are continuing.
