Springs teen sprints toward national track glory

The Matriculant from Boys High has dreams on and off the field.

Nkanyezi Ndawo (18) aims for the stars one track meeting at a time. The matric learner at Springs Boys High School was a passionate rugby player before he felt he had to change sports.

“Last year I decided to try out relay as an alternative to rugby and fell in love with it.”

Not only did the passion grow, but his talents became apparent as he continued to thrive within the sport.

“I did well from school inter-Springs up to the district where I received my provincial colours.”

This year has been no exception as he performed well in the 100m relay and 110m hurdles.

Nkanyezi does well on and off the field and his career aspirations involve helping fellow athletes.

“I came second in the provincial finals to qualify for the nationals.”

Nkanyezi is as active at school as he is on the track. He also serves as the representative learner counsel (RCL) and is the school’s public relations officer.

His father, Sam, could not be more proud. Nkanyezi hopes to become a national champion in relay and hurdles.

“I also want to further my studies to become a biokineticist, which provides scientifically based physical activity to improve health, prevent disease, and aid in rehabilitation for other sports people.”
