Armed suspect arrested after high-speed escape attempt in Springs

The police are still looking for the three suspects who fled the scene.

Detectives arrested a man after a car chase early on Monday morning. Springs SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Themba Tshabalala said the chase began in Payneville.

“While tracing a suspect, detectives came across a car driving recklessly at high speed. It passed a stop sign, almost causing an accident.”

They chased the car, trying to stop it, but the driver ignored them and continued speeding.

“The car had four male occupants.”

The detectives persisted with the chase until the men drove into the Everest informal settlement, where they lost control of their car, hitting the wall of a small business.

Three of the four men jumped out of the car and fled the scene, while officers arrested the fourth man.

“They found a firearm in his possession. On searching the car, they found another one. Both had their serial numbers filed off. One firearm was loaded, and the other had no magazine.”

The man was arrested and detained at the Springs SAPS Police Station.

He will appear in the Springs Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of two unlicensed firearms and unlicensed ammunition.

The other suspects are still at large.
