Local talent shines at boxing competition
The competition was a round robin where boxers from six districts participated. The results will be announced during this week.
Five districts participated to be the best of the best in the Gauteng Youth and Elite Championships from May 14 to 18.
Some local talent included boxers from Bert Collins Boxing Club in Springs, Big Walker in Duduza, Total Success in Tsakane, Super Tigers in Kwa-Thema and Brakpan Boxing Club.
Sedibeng had boxers from about five clubs of their district; Gauteng West brought boxers from six clubs, Joburg had the biggest team with eight clubs, and four clubs represented Tshwane Metro.
“Bert Collins only entered two boxers. Jacobus Jonker (17) in the 71kg division was supposed to have two bouts, but he lost his first bout and declared the winner of his second bout because of a walkover.”
“Geannè Dicks (23), who participated in the 75kg elite women, could not compete because she was sick and will have to box on May 31 in Alberton,” said Bert Collins’ founder and coach, Jeanette Dyzel.
The championship was a round robin, which means fighters in a group and matched against each other. The fighters accumulated points, and the winners will be announced this week.
“The overall boxing was excellent. A Gauteng team will be announced soon to represent the province at the South African Championships from July 1 to 7,” she said.
