Ekurhuleni urges parents to vaccinate as measles outbreak persists

With measles outbreaks declared in Ekurhuleni, the city is urging parents to vaccinate children aged 6 months to 15 years.

Germiston – The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) recently announced it vaccinated 486 564 children during its measles campaign, which ran from August 4 to September 12.

The campaign targeted schools, creches, taxi ranks, and malls to curb the spread of the highly contagious disease. Although the official drive has ended, vaccinations are still being administered at all municipal clinics, with the city aiming to reach its target of vaccinating 1.1 million children.

Health officials have identified the Ekurhuleni South Health Sub-district, which covers Katlehong, Vosloorus, Thokoza, Alberton, and Eden Park, as the area with the lowest vaccination coverage.

Only 42% of the targeted population in these communities has been vaccinated, prompting a call for intensified outreach and support.

According to the city, delays in obtaining signed parental consent forms remain a major barrier. Vaccine hesitancy, particularly among parents of children attending private schools, has also slowed progress.

Despite these challenges, officials stress that vaccination is critical, especially as there are measles outbreaks in parts of Ekurhuleni.

“We urge parents and guardians to ensure their children are protected. Vaccination is free and available at all city clinics,” the municipality said in a statement.

All children aged six months to 15 years, regardless of previous vaccination status, are eligible. The city encouraged parents to visit their nearest clinic to safeguard both their children and the wider community.
