Laerskool Werda hosts its first-ever eisteddfod

Participants were awarded certificates, with top winners recognised in each grade.

Students from Laerskool Werda showcased their talents during the school’s inaugural eisteddfod on September 22. Grade R to Grade Three students impressed the audience as they recited poems in both English and Afrikaans.

The competition rules allowed only facial expression and voice projection, with no use of body movements. All participants received certificates, while top performers in each grade were recognised.

Salmah Chopi was named the Grade R winner, Tshegofatso Mononyane and Nolwandle Khumalo shared the Grade One title, and Thato Damesi walked away as the Grade Three winner.

Organiser Ronel Wallace said she hopes the event will grow in the coming years to include other schools.

“The students did amazing. The aim is to get as many of them to participate as possible. The coaches were great too; they played a huge role in the event’s success. Without them, we wouldn’t have these festivities,” she said.
