Springs resident reports concern regarding SAPS response time after burglary

A Springs resident says he is concerned for his safety after a house burglary, claiming the police delayed their response and have still not collected evidence from the scene.

A Pollak Park resident is concerned about the handling of his house burglary case, saying the Springs SAPS did not promptly respond, leaving him feeling unsafe.

Adriaan Burger said his flat was broken into on December 19, but the SAPS had not collected fingerprints in his home or car, also broken into.

He said several items were stolen, including two cameras, an external hard drive and a vehicle headlight and battery.

He is disappointed in the SAPS and feels they did not act with urgency.

On December 21, he told the Springs Advertiser, “Upon discovering my home had been broken into, I immediately contacted the Springs SAPS. I received a reference number for my report, indicating that they would attend to the situation. I am disheartened to report that no police officer has arrived to address my concerns. I have also not received any communication or updates regarding my case.”

This publication spoke to Burger again on January 2 to get an update, to which he said an investigator visited his home on December 30.

“We had a brief meeting. The investigator told me I have to set an appointment with him and the eyewitness to get a statement, or the case will be closed,” he explained.

He alleged that an eyewitness identified a known criminal as being involved in the crime. The resident said he has since received threats. Burger says he does not feel safe in his home since the incident.

“The person involved is walking around the area, and I am forced to lock myself up, afraid that he will do it again,” he said.

This publication sent an enquiry to the Springs SAPS, which acknowledged receiving the complaint.
“We take all complaints seriously and regret any dissatisfaction experienced by them. The matter has been noted, and I am establishing the facts around the complaint,” spokesperson Sergeant Charity Zwane.
