WATCH: Love story spans decades for Springs couple Kenneth and Mary Bubb

As the month of love begins, Springs couple Kenneth and Mary Bubb look back on a marriage built on respect, support and simple joys.

As the month of love begins, Springs couple Kenneth (89) and Mary (86) Bubb reflect on the moments that defined their marriage and the simple things that continue to keep their bond strong.

The Bubbs, who will be celebrating their 68th wedding anniversary on June 21, shared their love story with the Springs Advertiser.

Mary shared that they met in 1956 at a social dance at the Masonic Hall in Boksburg. She said that after three months together, she realised that Kenneth would be her life partner. Ken, as Mary calls him, said it was love at first sight, and he was charmed by her smile.

“I love everything about her, especially when she smiles at me every morning when I bring her tea or coffee in bed,” said Ken.

Mary expressed that Ken always makes her tea, whether in the morning or during the day, because only he knows how she likes it.

After many years together, Mary said the time together has brought them closer and allowed them to understand each other better.

“In every difficulty, we support each other because that is what love is all about and we don’t argue a lot. Instead, we sit and talk about it, even though we don’t agree.

“We don’t shout at each other, and we discuss everything and find ways to change and fix the matter at hand,” said Mary.

Mary highlighted that funny jokes and videos from their daughters and friends are some of the things that keep them laughing.

She added that they often reminisce about the times they visited other countries. The Bubbs are blessed with three daughters, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mary said their children are their biggest blessing, and seeing them succeed in their lives has been a wonderful thing to witness.

“Ken has been a wonderful father and a supportive grandfather, and he loves them all to the moon and back,” she added.

Ken shared that he did everything expected of a man for his wife and children, and added that doing so for his family brought him joy.

“We have done everything together as a family, from vacationing in various countries to going on cruises, and we did the best for our daughters,” he said.

When asked how they celebrate Valentine’s Day, Ken said they would go for a meal and that he would surprise Mary with Red Door perfume, her favourite, and a bouquet of roses.

Ken said that their love for each other grows day by day, and that love is about respecting the person you are with.

Mary and Ken advised young couples to be faithful, support each other, and, if something is bothering them, sit down and discuss it.

“Please don’t fight, and love each other,” concluded Ken.
