Pickleball gains momentum in Springs after lively open day

Residents turned out in numbers for a pickleball open day at the Springs Racquet Club.

The Springs Racquet Club hosted a pickleball open day on March 21 at its courts in Selection Park, drawing an enthusiastic crowd of players and spectators.

Attendees enjoyed a vibrant and social atmosphere taking part in friendly matches and getting a feel for the fast-growing sport.

The club’s chairperson Sanet Burger said she was pleasantly surprised by the turnout especially after the event had to be postponed from March 14 due to bad weather.

She noted that while pickleball is still relatively new in Springs, interest in the sport is steadily increasing.

“I’m glad to see so many people here enjoying themselves. Pickleball is definitely picking up. Some people confuse it with paddle which it is not.

“It’s something new to introduce, but once people understand it they tell others. Our membership is growing quickly which is wonderful to see.”

Burger also highlighted the importance of staying active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

“It is essential to keep moving and look after your health. What I love about this sport is that it doesn’t matter what age you are.

“You can socialise while doing something good for your body. It’s important to have a balanced lifestyle,” she said.
