Two hitchhikers arrested for possession of stolen copper in Springs
Two men were arrested during an operation on the N17. They also failed to provide valid identification documents.
The EMPD arrested two men, aged 42 and 43, on March 20 for possession of suspected stolen copper and contravention of the Immigration Act.
According to the EMPD, officers were conducting a high-speed operation on the N17 freeway when they spotted two men hitchhiking.
“Officers approached the pair with the intention of removing them from the freeway, as their presence posed a danger to motorists.
“While engaging with the pedestrians, they noticed that the men appeared nervous and repeatedly clenched their carry bags,” said the EMPD.
The officers conducted a body search, during which they uncovered three rolled copper cables in each suspect’s bag, along with various tools.
“When questioned about the items, the suspects failed to provide a satisfactory explanation. The two men were also unable to produce valid identification documents permitting them to be in the country,” the EMPD added.
The duo was immediately handcuffed and taken to the Springs Police Station.
“The suspected loot was seized, and they are expected to appear at the Springs Magistrate’s Court soon,” the EMPD said.
