Annual Trap de Val ride combines cycling and charity

Community members are invited to support the Teddy Bear Foundation for Abused Children by helping raise funds while enjoying a challenging cycling experience.

Cyclists are invited to take part in the Trap de Val, a popular gravel ride that combines sport with a good cause.

The event will take place on May 16 and aims to raise funds for the Teddy Bear Foundation for Abused Children.

The ride started in 2020 with just three friends who wanted to do something meaningful. Since then, it has grown into a well-loved annual event, with nearly 200 riders taking part in 2025.

The 162km route begins at the Cycle Hub at Thaba Trails in Johannesburg and ends at the historic Val Hotel in the small town of Val, Mpumalanga. The route is mostly gravel, making it a great challenge for riders who enjoy off-road cycling.

Participants can choose to ride solo or form a duo team, where two riders share the distance. E-bikes are also allowed, but riders must plan their battery use carefully.

Along the way, there will be four water points and a halfway food stop to keep riders going. At the finish, cyclists can enjoy a meal, relax and take part in a special auction to raise more funds.

All money raised will support the work of the Teddy Bear Foundation, which has been helping abused children and their families since 1986. The organisation provides counselling, medical care and family support.

Entry costs are R750 for solo riders and R850 for teams. Riders will also receive a goodie bag, including a water bottle and a handmade edible medal.

Entries close on May 10, with late entries closing on May 14. For more info and online entry https://secure.onreg.com/onreg2/front/step1.php?id=7596
