San Michele Home residents receive handmade Mandela Day blankets

The blankets were handed over by the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day group.

San Michele Home, which cares for residents from Springs, Brakpan and surrounding communities, recently received 268 hand-made blankets from 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day.

The blankets were donated to the home on May 22.

“Today we visited the San Michele Home, a long-standing care facility in Brakpan. We handed out just under 300 hand-made (with love) blankets to the residents,” said Annie Robinson Grealy, representative for 67 Blankets, in a Facebook post.

“This morning, San Michele Home had the absolute privilege of receiving 268 beautifully hand-knitted blankets from the wonderful team at 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day,” said Jenny van Graan, the home’s marketing manager.

“Seeing the gratitude and joy on the faces of both our residents and the blanket donors was truly priceless and deeply touching. Your visit brought so much warmth, comfort and happiness,” she continued.

In the morning, the group received a tour of the grounds and the home’s various wards. “Many were surprised to see just how large the home is, and to learn more about our history,” Jenny explained.

The group was told how many years the home has existed and that residents even participate in the Special Olympics.

“Some of our residents even entertained the visitors with singing as their own special way of saying thank you. It created such a heartfelt and memorable atmosphere for everyone present,” she said.

“To the incredible team at 67 Blankets, thank you for making such a meaningful impact in the lives of our residents. Your kindness, compassion and generosity are sincerely appreciated.

“May you continue the amazing work you do in communities across South Africa, bringing warmth, dignity and hope to so many,” she concluded.

San Michele began as a small home caring for soldiers’ children and has since developed into an adult care facility for individuals over 18 who qualify for SASSA grants and require specialised care, now supporting around 267 residents with mental disabilities who receive full-time support.

The home relies on ongoing donations and sponsorships to sustain its services, with leadership including centre manager Marius Bosman and dedicated staff such as Van Graan and Amanda Koopman.

“Thank you to Jenny and Amanda for taking us through your amazing facility and for the important work you do every day,” said Annie.
