WATCH: Motorists raise alarm over deteriorating Springs West Road intersection
Ward 74 councillor Thulani Simelane says repeated complaints over the damaged corner of Springs West Road and Neon Road have gone unanswered, with motorists facing ongoing safety risks due to potholes, a burst water pipe and poor lighting.
Motorists have raised concerns over the deteriorating road conditions at the corner of Springs West and Neon roads, where potholes and an underground burst water pipe have caused ongoing disruption.
Ward 74 Clr Thulani Simelane says he has been receiving daily complaints from motorists.
“Rand Water has been promising that it will fix the first pipe. Unfortunately, more than five months have passed without that promise being fulfilled. We are here to ask that they make it a priority to speed up the process of repairing this road.
“Motorists struggle to drive safely at night because there are no street lights on the road, which contributes to accidents and traffic congestion. This is affecting the infrastructure of the City of Ekurhuleni,” said Simelane.
In 2020, Rand Water carried out infrastructure upgrades and augmentation projects aimed at ensuring that new bulk pipelines are constructed to last between 50 and 100 years.
Simelane explained how the pipe began to leak in 2024.
“When it first leaked, we reported it and Rand Water fixed it, but in January of this year, it started leaking again,” he said.
He says they reported the issue when it started leaking, and Rand Water claimed they would fix it.
“At first, they said it would be fixed on March 28, which never happened. As we are here on June 5, there is no activity and no indication that they have started or they will start anytime soon,” he said.
Wright Park resident and Sector 6 patroller, Isaac Mokwana, called on the relevant stakeholders to intervene.
“We don’t like seeing our community being shown in a negative light. If they fix this quickly, it will help avoid accidents,” he said.
He pointed out that the road barriers had all fallen over, highlighting how difficult they are for motorists to see because of the lack of street lighting.
Mokwana put them back up and also added red and white tape as a temporary solution to make them more noticeable to motorists.
The Springs Advertiser sent an enquiry to Rand Water, which had no response at the time of publication.
