Swift response leads to recovery of firearms and vehicle

The Springs Crime Prevention Unit arrested two suspects and recovered two firearms with ammunition, a white BMW and false number plates, on Friday.

The swift response by members of the police led to the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of two firearms with ammunition, false number plates, and a white BMW on Friday.

The arrests happened as a result of a local security company received a report about a vehicle sought for its use in the commission of crimes through the Safer City app.

According to Springs Police spokesperson Sergeant Themba Tshabalala, the security members followed up on the last location of the vehicle, which directed them to the Springs CBD.

“They called the police for backup, and the Springs Crime Prevention Unit arrived on the scene,” said Tshabalala.

The two men allegedly planned to rob a cigarette shop when they were boxed in by the police.

Further investigations revealed one firearm belonged to a deceased person and the other to someone in Soweto.

The duo is linked to an armed robbery in Benoni.

Both men will appear in the Springs Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and armed robbery.
