Rus ‘n Bietjie Old Age Home residents were taken down memory lane as they enjoyed a delightful FAK production, which celebrated Afrikaans music and culture through well-loved songs and dance performances.

Organised by Sandra Taljaard and Solidariteit Helpende Hand, the event was a way to give back to the community by spreading joy with old folks.

Vice-chairperson of Helpende Hand, Daleen Groenewald, reflected on the event’s success.

“They were so joyful and excited. At first they thought it was a show they were going to watch, but soon they realised that they could participate and that got them loosened up quickly,” she said warmly.

Taljaard hosted the event, taking residents on a nostalgic journey through the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, highlighting the era’s entertainment, fashion and iconic vehicles.

“We were very impressed with their general knowledge and wit,” Groenewald said.

She added that the attendees showed gratitude to the organisers for hosting such an event for them.

“The overall feedback was that this fired them up and made them look forward to the rest of their lives,” she said.

Groenewald explained that the aim was for the residents to feel less alone.

“Our elderly can get lonely, and we wanted to bless them with a little fun and love and show them that we care,” she said.

She encouraged the community to show kindness to elderly people.

“Remember that many of our elderly are left alone and miss their spouse, children, friends and their old lives.

“We need to care for them as they cared for us. Appreciate your mom and dad while you still can,” Groenewald said.
