Springs Mine and Military Museum adds historic Turbomeca engine to museum collection
A historic engine once used to power South African Air Force helicopters is now on display at the Springs Mine and Military Museum.
The Springs Mine and Military Museum (Springs MMM) has yet another exciting addition to its growing collection.
The Turbomeca Turmo engine is now on display. Springs MMM founder Tony da Cruz talked about the significance of the engine.
“It powered the fleet of Puma and Frelon helicopters used by the South African Air Force (SAAF) in its border war and in the humanitarian missions across Southern Africa,” he said.
It was donated by Starlite Aviation and transported by JR Mackays Diesel and Motor Engineering. It has been mounted separately alongside the Puma Helicopter.
Da Cruz spoke about what the new addition means for the museum and their effort to preserve Springs’ industrial industry.
“It’s a very special technical display of a historic Turboshaft engine for our visitors. I hope it will spark curiosity and interest among our youth in industrial military engineering that will hopefully result in future engineers,” Da Cruz said.
