Springs Boys High School wins 5 categories at national band championships
Springs Boys High School hosted this year’s band championships and won in five categories.
Springs Boys High School’s band reigned supreme as hosts at this year’s South African School Band Association National Championships 2026, winning five categories.
Out of eight categories, the school’s band walked away with Best Showband, Best Parade Band, Best Overall Marching Band, Best Pep Band and Best Open Ensemble.
The championships were held from October 1 to 3.This was the band’s first competition following the passing of the band’s master, Shawn Boucher, earlier this year.

The new bandmaster and former band member, Obakeng Matsepe, told the Springs Advertiser that it was a great honour to be the host school for this year’s championships. He said that every school brought their A-game, and it was beautiful to see.
“I am so proud of our boys. All their hard work and sacrifices throughout the year were evident.
“My wish for them was to give their all on that stage and on the field and I would be lying if I said they didn’t do that. The hard work continues as we look forward to raising our standard for the 2027 season,” said Matsepe.

Band member Simphiwe Obose said that the second day was a little stressful, but believed that the band played to the best of their ability and had fun.
He noted that the final day was full of energy because of the crowd and parents who came to watch their children showcase their talent and the hard work they had put in throughout the year.
“The prize-giving was genuinely amazing and I would like to thank all the schools that came and showed what they are capable of, and we will see everyone again next year,” said Obose.
