SOB win first league match

Springs Old Boys (SOB) First League team beat Kempton Park A team by four wickets at SOB grounds on Saturday.

It was the first game of the new season where Kempton won the toss and chose to bat first.

The local fast bowlers bowled well and with everyone contributing a wicket SOB managed to restrict Kempton Park to 124 runs after 28 overs.

Top bowler was Jonathan Woolley who bowled seven overs, three maidens with 19 runs for four wickets.

Old Boys went into bat and needed 124 runs to win.

“We knew it wasn’t going to be easy as Kempton Park had a strong bowling attack,” says Lionel Joubert, chairman of SOB.

With a few early wickets lost, SOB managed to win the game in the 30th over when team captain Riaan van der Merwe and Ruan Geering had a good partnership.

The top scorer was Cameron Birnie with 34 runs and Riaan with 26 runs not out.

Lionel says Riaan and Cameron made sure SOB could walk away with a victory of four wickets.

“It is a good start to the new season,” he adds.
