Marievale Bird Sanctuary gets a boost
Friends of the Marievale Bird Sanctuary hosted their third fund-raising event, at Springs Town Bowling Club, on Sunday.
There were 88 people who played bowls and filled the two greens. Each team of non-bowlers was lead by a club member.
Justin Donaldson, chairman of Marievale Bird Sanctuary, says this event is always fun and they appreciate all the help they can get to raise funds for the maintenance of the sanctuary. He says it has now become an annual event.

“It was a very good turnout this year and the proceeds are much needed,” he says.
The team who won first prize comprised Cecilia Fourie, Louis Otto, Sean and Zoe Lutz. Mike Clarke, Michael Arnott, Danie Pretorius and Gordon Johnson took second place, while Mike Smith, Clive Billowed, Barbara Pocock and Carol Billowed came in third.
Environmentalist Stan Madde, who was a special guest at the event, shared his concern for keeping the bird sanctuary, as well as the Blesbokspruit, afloat, as it is the only Ramsar site in Gauteng.
He says although he has stepped down, the sanctuary is in good hands.

Vice-president Izak Hattingh says the support the club gets from these people is amazing.
“It is good to have a strong bond between the club and the different organisations in support of our club,” he says.
