Springs rugby day a great success

Springs Rugby Club hosted a rugby day on Saturday with various clubs attending.

Teams from as far as Cullinan, Krugersdorp, Potchefstroom and Randfontein, among others, played on the day.

Springs’ second team faced off against the Johannesburg Bobbies second team.

After an intense first half in which ball handling mistakes were made by both teams, Springs upped their offence.

At the end of a gruelling game, Springs beat their opponents 17-7.

Marcel Viljoen, Henk Smit and Wimpie Raman each scored a try for the team.

Pitso Moloi scored a conversion.

The Springs first team played against Randfontein and won the game 24-14.

Rudolph Cronje from Springs Rugby Club says it was an extremely eventful day.

“There were 21 matches played and 42 teams, the biggest yet,” he says.

“We had 1 925 people pass through the gate and it was a really great success.”

The rain, lightning and thunder did not deter the teams, who finished all of their games.

A few of the matches were moved on a few minutes, but they continued playing until the last one finished.

Cronje adds that the funds raised on the day will be allocated to the club as is needed.

The Springs u-21 team did not play due to their opponents withdrawing at 6am on Saturday morning.

The Springs first team is gearing up to play in two leagues over the next few months.

“It really was a huge success and we’re hoping next year will be even better.”
