Benoni Harriers shine at Garbie Road Relay

The annual Garbie Road Relay 5/10km took place at the Springs Rugby Club on Sunday at 7am.

The annual Garbie Road Relay 5/10km took place at the Springs Rugby Club on Sunday at 7am.

Thousands of athletes made the early morning journey in their team colours, to participate in the race, while the volunteers set up water stands along the route from 5am.

The winning junior boys’ team (u-19), Benoni Harriers, had worked long and hard to take the first spot.

“I am very happy with our results because we put a lot of effort into preparing for the event,” says Enock Tshabalala, the anchor runner of the team.

The Harriers also won first place in the men’s race and the u-13 boys’ race.

The winning ladies team, Catch me if can, is made up of four Striders and a Myway athlete.

Caroline Koll has just returned from a podium finish at a triathlon in China.

On their Facebook page, Jackie Seddon, one of the organisers, says: “A big thank you to all who came along to support us at the Garbie relay this morning.

“A great morning was had by all.

“Hope everyone has good memories of the day.

“It really was a competitive race at the front.

“There were great results from the juniors.”

The EMPD and other volunteers assisted in regulating the traffic and ensuring the safety of the participants as they travelled through Springs’ streets.
