Striders Athletic Club and Springs Platinum Refinery Athletic Club compete in Comrades Marathon

Larissa Donker of the Striders Club says: “The emotion one feels at the start of the race when runners all stand united listening to the national anthem and chariots of fire is inspirational.”

 

Thirty-two members from the Striders Athletic Club, as well as 12 members from Springs Platinum Refinery Athletic Club (SPRAC), competed in this year’s Comrades Marathon as the famous race marked its 94th anniversary.

The gruelling marathon started at 5.30am and finished at 5.30pm.

Athletes cover a distance of approximately 87km.

The marathon started at the City Hall in Durban and the finish line was at the Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg.

Striders who competed in the women’s open was:

• Mariette Rossouw – 11:47:01

Striders who competed in the women’s 50-59 category were:

• Annetjie Nel – 10:53:28

• Annie Arbuckle – 11:48:43

Striders who competed in the women’s 60 plus category were:

• Karin Smith – 9:44:30

• Petra Myburgh – 11:45:57

The club wishes to congratulate Johan Roos, who successfully completed his 20th Comrades and also Zachariah Tshabalala, who got his green number on his third attempt.

Men from the SPRAC who competed in the men’s open category were:
