Two Springs pool players will participate in the South African Pool Championships in June.
David Horn (61) and Ann Smith (50) are hoping to play well enough to get a spot on the national team.
“Just like every sport, the only way to get really good at it is to put in the time. If you show up with the right intention, you will be good at it eventually,” said Horn.
He will be participating in the veteran’s category.
Smith has never been intimidated by playing the male-dominated sport.

“I play in the men’s team for the club. But when we compete, I represent the ladies,” she added.
The two pool enthusiasts are not amateurs in the game.
“I used to own my own pool club, but the league died down in 2016. So everyone stopped playing,” explained Horn.
They were ecstatic when Chris Swart started Straight Shots in 2021.
“The club was a revival to the sport. There were no pool clubs in Springs anymore,” said Horn.

The club is affiliated with the Eastern Gauteng Pool Association. They are now working on establishing a social league in and around Springs.
“We also want to challenge young people, women and all races to join in on the fun,” he said.
Horn hopes that they will be able to host a coaching and refereeing workshop after the national competition.
