A different take on exorcism

To say this was a strange movie is underestimating how far from what I expected this turned out to be.

One synopsis describes the movie: “The fate of the world hangs in the balance when a cleric battles an ancient satanic force for a young woman’s soul.”

Sounds dramatic, doesn’t it?

Sounds like quite the watch.

In actual fact I really didn’t get the sense that the fate of the world, or even the church, was at risk.

Rather it seemed the young woman in question had merely taken a turn towards madness after being bitten by a bird which attacked the bus she was on following a birthday party cake incident in which she cut herself, requiring a visit to the emergency room.

It’s all a little bizarre and certainly not in keeping with the gore and fun of movies like the Exorcist which, I believe, is the benchmark by which all exorcism movies have come to be judged.

Like this classic, two priests are needed to do the job but one of them seems to just stand around contemplating getting involved as the other goes to work with little success.

I’m not saying it is all that bad, but not that good either and certainly nowhere near the calibre of William Friedkin’s 1973 original Exorcist movie with Linda Blair’s unforgettable performance as the young girl possessed.
