“The city, through the Metro Police and other law enforcement agencies, are already engaging and involving nearby members of the community residing around the Geduld Cemetery so they report to the nearest police station and to use our Call Centre number 086 054 3000, if they see any form of vandalism taking place in the cemetery.
“While a risk assessment to establish the type of risk and the remedial action needed is underway, we will continue to patrol, while also reminding members of the community to be our eyes and ears on the ground,” says Gadebe.
The spokesperson went on to say while there is no caretaker as the cemetery is an inactive cemetery, records are placed at Springs and Petersfield cemeteries, and on a monthly basis a full maintenance contractor maintains the cemetery.
There were also plans in place to demolish the house-like structure at the cemetery.
