Springs Taxi Association announces fare hikes starting May 1 amid rising fuel costs

Commuters in Springs will soon pay more for taxi travel as operators respond to ongoing fuel price increases.

The Springs Taxi Association wishes to alert community members of an upcoming increase in taxi fares, effective from May 1.

The association’s spokesperson, Thabo Rakhuba, explained that rising petrol prices have placed significant pressure on the taxi industry, leaving operators with no choice but to adjust fares.

“We do not wish to increase prices, but due to the increase in petrol prices, we are forced to,” said Rakhuba.

He added that commuters can expect price changes across various destinations within the Springs routes. However, the association is still finalising the new fare structure.

“We want to inform our commuters of this change before it comes into effect,” he said.

Rakhuba further noted that discussions are ongoing with route operators to ensure that the increases remain as fair and minimal as possible, while still allowing drivers to sustain their operations.

“We understand the economic pressure our commuters are facing, and we are trying by all means to balance affordability with the survival of our industry,” he added.

He urged passengers to remain patient during the transition period, as adjustments will be implemented across different routes.

The association also encouraged commuters to use only registered taxis and to report any unfair or illegal fare increases to the relevant authorities.

Updated fare lists will be made available at taxi ranks and through official association communication channels ahead of the implementation date next month.
