Support cancer survivors at Cansa Relay For Life this May

The East Rand community is being called on to stand in solidarity with cancer survivors, caregivers and families at the upcoming Cansa Relay For Life East Rand.
The event will take place on May 9 from 16:00 to 22:00 at Woodlands International College, 157 Leith Road, Bartlett.
Held under the theme ‘Rise Together Against Cancer’, the event aims to bring together cancer survivors, caregivers, schools, families, businesses and community members for an evening of remembrance, support and action.
This year’s relay forms part of Cansa’s 95th anniversary celebrations, marking nearly a century of cancer education, support, advocacy and care in South Africa.
Cansa Relay For Life East Rand chairperson Anand Gounden said the event is more than just a gathering.
“Relay For Life is more than just an event, it’s a moving experience that celebrates survivorship, honours those we have lost, and inspires communities to take action.”
The evening will include the survivors’ lap, which celebrates those who have faced cancer, followed by the caregivers’ lap, which recognises the important role played by loved ones who support cancer patients.
Another highlight will be the luminaria ceremony, where candles are lit and displayed in honour of those who have lost their lives to cancer, those still fighting, and those who have survived.
Luminaria bags will be available at the event and can be decorated with personal messages, photos and memories.
Attendees can expect food stalls and music as this event is about oneness. Gounden added that every team registered and every step taken helps CANSA continue to offer services such as cancer screening, early detection, tele-counselling, support groups, home-based care, wigs, prostheses, and medical equipment.
“Relay For Life is a powerful reminder that no one faces cancer alone. As we celebrate CANSA’s 95th anniversary, we call on the East Rand community to stand with us, to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones, and take meaningful action,” Gounden said.
