Accident – Driver of vehicle seriously injured
“I tried to swerve off to the side of the road, but it was too late and we collided,”

Coal truckers sat in a queue on the road towards Duvha Power Station as a serious accident occurred on the road causing heavy traffic.
The accident occurred on Friday evening, July 22 at approximately 19:30 just over the bridge towards the power station.

A coal truck and a light blue Volkswagen Citi Golf was involved in a collision.
Mr Bongate Hadebe who was driving the truck alleged that he was travelling towards the power station, when he noticed that the driver of the Citi Golf, Mr Tshifhiwa Mdau overtook another vehicle.

“I tried to swerve off to the side of the road, but it was too late and we collided,” said Hadebe on the scene.
Mdau’s vehicle went straight under the truck. With the momentum the cab of the truck along with the Citi Golf went off the side of the road.
“I feel so bad about what has happened, I really hope and pray that the driver will be ok as I tried my best to get out of his way,” said a shocked and traumatized Hadebe.

Emergency services, Witbank Fire Department, Witbank Police Service and Emalahleni Traffic arrived on scene.
Immediately paramedics and medics started stabilizing the seriously injured Mdau, while the fire department used the Jaws of Life to cut away the crumpled car from the driver’s legs which were trapped.
Mdau was eventually loaded into the ambulance and was transported to Life Cosmos Hospital for further treatment.
“He is currently in the Intensive Care Unit as he broke several bones in his body and had a head injury as well,” said Mr Gerrie Dalgleish from the ambulance service.
“We cannot comment at this time on his condition,” said Ms Christelle Matthee Marketing and Communications Coordinator from Life Cosmos Hospital.
