Eskom severs Emalahleni

The question why only certain areas are targeted to be switched off trended on social media as the news broke.

It is inevitable, service your generator and invest in a gas stove because despite all attempts to meet the obligations towards Eskom the municipality did not receive sufficient income to service its accounts in full.
Eskom is now taking drastic steps and will be introducing bulk interruptions twice a day starting on Monday, January 23.

“We are still in constant communication with Eskom and have until January 22 to reach agreement on how the outstanding debt will be serviced,” said Municipal Manager, Mr Theo van Vuuren.

He said residents owe the municipality R2.2 billion and should just a third respond voluntarily, the Emalahleni Local Municipality would be out of the woods.

He urges the community to cooperate and meet their obligations and to make use of the amnesty been offered by the municipality as well as to support the various initiatives to address illegal connections.

“This is critical to enable us to prevent this cut off. I remain positive that we have made significant progress to reach a new agreement but can not pull this one through without people playing their part.”

This interruption will have severe impacts on health care, traffic and issues such as water provision and economic activities, and should be prevented.
