4th Biggest PowerBall pay-out won in the history of South Africa

PowerBall recently recorded one of the biggest pay-outs in its history. What are some of the highest lotto winnings in South Africa?

On Tuesday, 26 November, the 4th biggest PowerBall pay-out was made to an unemployed father in Makhado, Limpopo. The father of 2, who won R114,242,816.50, bought his ticket for R15 at the Sharp Supermarket and selected his own numbers. The winning numbers were 2, 8, 11, 13, 32 and the PowerBall was 3.

The list of top 10 highest lotto winnings consists of 7 PowerBall winners, 1 PowerBall Plus winner and 2 Lotto winners.

2019 – delivered 3 of the biggest SA Powerball winnings with the amounts of R232,131,750.69, R141,343,180.95, and R114,242,816.50. There was also 1 Lotto winner in 2019 for the amount of R79,874,757.50 and 1 PowerBall Plus winner for the amount of R83,853,069.85.

2018 – 2 of the highest winning amounts of R145,469,799.30 and R110,000,000.00 – this was shared between 4 lotto winners who each received R27.5 million.

2016, 2011 and 2010 each had 1 winner with the amounts of R87,624,435.00, R102,016,595.00 and R91,068,427.00.

Don’t forget to claim your winnings

To claim your winning ticket, you need to have proof that your numbers are the winning numbers. Then provide the supermarket or Lotto/PowerBall retailer with your ticket. If you placed your bet online, then you have your proof on your mobile or laptop of the ticket that you’ve purchased. You have 365 days to claim your prize, regardless of how big or small the amount is.

Should you not claim your winnings within the 365 days, it will go towards charitable causes, which is funded by the National Lottery Commission fund.

Unclaimed winnings in South Africa

On the 23rd of April 2019 there was an amount of R83,853,069.85 won with the PowerBall Plus after 22 rollovers, the winning numbers were 3, 23, 25, 38, 44 and the PowerBall was 9. This amount remains unclaimed to date, as there is no record stating that the amount was claimed. The ticket was bought at Checkers, Durbanville in Cape Town, Western Cape. Fortunately, there is still time left for the winner to claim his/her prize.

A definite unlucky Cape Town player forfeited his/her winnings, when the amount of R28,030,786.20  was not claimed by the 13th of February 2019. The PowerBall Plus was won on the 13th of February 2018 and the R15 QuickPick ticket was bought at Shoprite Checkers in the Sanlam Centre in Parow.

On 30 June 2018 another PowerBall Plus winner for the amount of R21,747,237.30 forfeited their winnings as they never stepped forward to claim the amount. The ticket was bought for R45 at Ifalethu Trading Store in Moshoeshoe Road, Sebokeng, Johannesburg.
