Rietspruit community has had it with abuse

Glencore Impunzi Complex and Seriti Power’s Closed Collieries came together for a common cause

Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is a monster faced by many, especially in small communities.

This monster has killed many women and left scars on innocent children.

In recent years, many women have been speaking up about their experiences with GBV which evidently became a national fight.

Glencore Impunzi Complex and Seriti Power’s Closed Collieries came together for a common cause.

Men who had supported the march against GBV.

The organisations joined forces with community members on December 1 in the fight against the scourge of gender-based violence within Rietspruit and surrounding farms.

Members of the communities voiced out their concerns about the abuse faced by women and children.

This initiative was also supported by SAPS in Kriel, ReAction and other health organisations.

Crowds came in numbers to march in Rietspruit, more especially in areas where GBV cases are known to be hotspots.

The passionate chanters attracted residents, who also joined in the march.

A candle-lighting ceremony was then held at the local clinic where advice on where to get help was shared; social workers and a legal advisor provided counseling on the day.

“It really hurts me to know that there are still many cruel men that beat women and children. This should stop!” said Thembi Tshabalala who is ward councilor in Rietspruit.

Many women who have experienced GBV came forward to tell their stories and to encourage other women to come out of such situations.

The event was also used as a platform to commemorate World Aids Day.
