The fire occurred on Monday night, December 13 at approximately 20:30.

At the block of shops on the corner of Haig and Arras Streets, smoke was seen bellowing in the evening skies from the shops.

The shops that were affected by the raging fire were Macarena, a hair salon and furniture store.

Mr Juan Coetzee, co-owner of Macarena Store said, “We received a phone call from the security guard from Curtain Dream and notified us about the fire. The security guard from Sunrise Security did not arrive for work that evening.”

The Coetzee family has lost everything in the fire; this year has been tough on the family.

Various fire departments were dispatched to assist to extinguish the blaze.

On Saturday, March 27 Juan’s father, Mr Stephanus Coetzee was shot in his leg when he parked his bakkie in the undercover parking area at Highveld Mall and the suspects got away with an undisclosed amount of cash.
