Chiraso – A teacher by purpose

This local teacher is filled with passion for teaching.

Finding your calling or purpose might be hard to discover, especially as a young person. This is something Chiraso Monyane was able to discover at the early stages of her career.

The 29-year-old Witbank High School teacher has been teaching at the school for five years.

She took a step to make a difference in her student’s lives by being more caring and showing compassion as she knew that it’s not easy being a learner.

The grade 12 English teacher started a Facebook Page called ‘Teachers by Purpose’ where she aims to raise awareness and to remove the stigma of teaching away.

Chiraso’s plan was to fight the attitude that people have towards teaching as it is not for everyone but for those who are chosen.

The eMalahleni born teacher believes that teaching is about serving and nurturing children to be better people in society.

She also wanted to prove that the career is not only for old people, but is also great for young and passionate teachers.

“We spend the whole day with these children, so we are the ones who know and understand them. We should be motivating and supporting them so that they can be better people in life. Our approach to them is very important,” said Chiraso.

Beyond many things that Chiraso has managed to achieve, she continues to pursue her Master’s in BA Psychology.

Chiraso aims to encourage other teachers to be more active and be more involved in their student’s lives; not just academically, but also in sports and other talents that students might have.
