Policeman critical after being stabbed in tavern in Marikana, Vosman

Police say an internal investigation is underway to determine whether the member was on or off duty during the incident.

Police are investigating an attempted murder case involving a 20-year-old police constable who is stationed at the Witbank SAPS’s Visible Policing Unit.

It is unclear whether the policeman was on or off duty during the incident which took place at a tavern in Marikana in the Vosman policing area on Sunday, December 11.

It is believed that the victim is in critical condition and is currently fighting for his life

“The member has two years of service in the SAPS. Three people were detained by the police for questioning concerning the incident. Preliminary investigation suggests that his service pistol was also taken from him during the incident,” said Mpumalanga Police Spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli.

A case of attempted murder has been opened and investigations are underway. Police say more details regarding the incident will be revealed as the investigation continues.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has strongly condemned the attack of the member meanwhile she has ordered the investigation and swift arrest of the perpetrator(s)
