Illegal gold processing plant shut down

This operation is part of the police's ongoing fight against illegal mining in Mpumalanga.

Police pounced on an illegal gold processing plant this morning.

The plant was operating in Kromdraai.

According to police, four men were arrested and it is believed that they are illegal immigrants.

One of the suspects said they were sifting sand.

The landlord of the smallholdings said she had no idea the men were allegedly processing gold on her doorstep.

“I honestly thought the men were sifting sand to sell,” she said.

Police confiscated all the equipment used in the operation.
