Carrol Shakwane takes centre stage
Born, and bred in eMalahleni, Carrol's experiences and upbringing have a big impact on his music.
In the thriving hip-hop culture of eMalahleni, Carrol Shakwane (26) has already established himself. His music is strongly influenced by his experiences and background, having been born and nurtured in eMalahleni.
He was influenced by his parents’ broad collection and the tales of hip-hop icons like Tupac and Nas while growing up in a musically rich home.
Carrol began recording himself rapping over instrumentals on cassette tapes, sparking a passion that would drive his artistic journey.
His music, which draws inspiration from Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, and Chance the Rapper, combines modern hip-hop with lyrical narrative. Socially conscious themes that tackle topics like social justice, self-empowerment, and personal development define Carroll’s artistic style.
Carrol’s creative process begins with free writing and brainstorming concepts, which are often sparked by life experiences, current events, and conversations.
“I find solace in morning journaling and meditation, crediting these rituals which help to spark my creativity,” said Carrol.
He describes one of his most notable achievements as performing at theatres and popular events around eMalahleni, “I have shared the stage with OG’s like Offensive Offence, King Ten, and Preacher and received an Underground Music Award nomination,” he said.
Carrol is ready to advance his music with a forthcoming collaborative album and a new EP.
To broaden his creative horizons, he intends to experiment with visual art and short films while working with producers and visual artists.
“I hope to leave a lasting legacy in the art world, inspiring positive change through my music. My advice to emerging artists is for them to stay authentic, persistent, and true to their visions,” Carrol concluded.
